Carmen Soares

Carmen Soares is a Full Professor of Classical Studies at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Coimbra, where she has taught and conducted research since 1994. She has supervised numerous master’s and doctoral students in the scientific areas of Food Heritage, History, and Cultures; Classical Cultures, Literatures, and Languages; and Ancient Greek History. In the field of Food Studies, she holds leadership positions in both education and research. These include serving as director of the “Food Heritage: Cultures and Identities” doctoral course and as General Editor of the multilingual journal DIAITA: Food & Heritage. In the domain of scientific management, she is the Scientific Coordinator of the Centre for Classical and Humanistic Studies (which hosts 150 researchers). In 2023, she became the Chair of the Research Committee of the European Institute for the History and Cultures of Food (Tours, France), with a mandate of six years. Her research interests, reflected in her publications in both Portuguese and English, include the history of bread, comfort food, ancient Greek cookbooks and gastronomic poetry, Hippocratic dietetics, and modern-era dietetics treatises by Portuguese authors.
