Delfim Leão is full Professor of Classical Studies at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Coimbra. Obtained the degree in Classical and Portuguese Languages and Literatures at the University of Coimbra (1988 to 1992). In 1995, completed the master’s degree in Latin Literature, focusing on Petronius’s Satyrica. Obtained the PhD in History of Classical Culture with the dissertation Solon – Ethics and Politics in 2000, also at the University of Coimbra. Rising to Associate Professor in 2002, took the Aggregation Examination in 2004. Vice-Rector for Culture and Open Science (2019-2023), Vice-Rector for Culture, Communication and Open Science (2023-) at Coimbra University. Appointed Member of the Scientific Council of the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique – Humaines & Sociales (CNRS – Paris) for the term 2023-28. Director of the PhD in Classical Studies. Director of Studies (representing Coimbra) for the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master “Religious Diversity in a Globalized World” (ReD Global). President of the International Plutarch Society from 2014 to 2017. Coordinator of the Centre for Classical and Humanistic Studies at the University of Coimbra from 2014 to 2019. President of the Portuguese Association of Higher Education Presses from 2011 to 2014. Director of Coimbra University Press from 2011 to 2021. Series editor of “Brill’s Plutarch Studies” (Leiden), with Lautaro Roig Lanzillotta, and of “Humanitas-Supplementum” (Coimbra). Coordinator the international journal “Ploutarchos” (Utah, Malaga and Coimbra) with Aurelio Pérez Jiménez and Frances B. Titchener. The areas of interest include ancient history, Greek law and political theory, theatrical pragmatics and the ancient novel. Published around 200 works in international journals, books and book chapters within these fields. Also has a profound interest in digital humanities, focusing particularly on scholarly publishing and communication, as well as multilingualism.
