Sérgio Rebelo Carvalho

Sérgio Rebelo Carvalho is an architect and founding partner of Atelier Sérgio Rebelo. He studied at the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Porto and at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne. He has been a speaker at conferences in Mexico, Chile, England, and Portugal, and a guest jury member at GSAPP Columbia University in New York. Between 2007 and 2017, he was the Design Director at FR-EE in New York, where he worked on the design of the Soumaya Museum, the New International Airport of Mexico City, Border City, a city located at the border between Mexico and the U.S., and led the winning project of the Hyperloop One Global Challenge. As an architect, he values the heritage of the “Oporto school,” testing and extending its principles to our daily life, blending them with both historical and highly innovative international experiences that address very contemporary concerns. In 2018, he founded Atelier Sérgio Rebelo in Porto with a team whose creative process results from a careful analysis of the historical, geographical, social, economic, and technological context in which their projects are developed. Currently, he has architectural projects ongoing both within and outside Portugal, including: the Quinta de Santo António project in the Alto Douro Wine Region, which has been recognized with international awards such as the A+ Awards 2021, the World Architecture Festival Award 2021, and the Douro Architecture Award 2024; the rehabilitation project of the São Sebastião Fort on Mozambique Island; the Odeón Restaurant in Tallinn, Estonia; the DOP Porto and DOC Douro restaurants by Chef Rui Paula in Porto; the mixed-use project on Rua da Escola Politécnica, next to the National Museum of Science in Lisbon; the Quinta de Cederma Hotel and Winery in the Douro; the São Gião Vinho Verde Winery in Guimarães and an eco-tourism resort in Goshen, Upstate NY, USA.
