STEP INTO THE VIKING AGE – THROUGH YOUR PHONE

At the Lofotr Viking Museum in Borg, Northern Norway, we’re bringing history to life using mobile augmented reality.

Through your phone’s camera, you’ll soon be able to experience what the landscape on Borg may have looked like during the Viking Age (11th century) and the Middle Ages (12th century), complete with reconstructed buildings, historical objects from the museum, and everyday life scenes.

Right now, we’re working on animations where a Viking man hangs stockfish on a fish flake, and a woman stirs a bubbling fish soup over the hearth inside the grand hall (see Figure 4).

By showcasing daily activities, this app lets you see, hear, and move through time, learning about life, culture, and traditions from a thousand years ago. The experience blends tangible history (like objects from Lofotr Viking Museum’s exhibitions) with storytelling and intangible heritage like food traditions (focus on stockfish).

Figure 1 shows the Viking chieftain’s house and a smaller Viking house from the 11th century.

Figure 2 shows the medieval house on a cold winter evening in the 12th century.

Figure 3 shows a possible reconstruction of a fish flake from the Viking Age.

Figure 4 shows a Viking woman stirring the pot. Note that the stirring spoon has not yet been created.
