THE POWER OF COLLABORATION: THE UTOPIA WORKSHOP IN BUAKABELVÅG

The Surplus Table became a powerful symbol of how meaningful collaboration can bring new value into a location. In synergy with the Utopia Workshop, created and facilitated by Nord University through the vision and dedication of Ove Daniel Jakobsen and Vivi Marie Lademo Storsletten, something truly unique unfolded.

Together, we explored new ways of gathering, connecting, and creating meaning around things that are often overlooked. Surplus food — rescued from local stores, restaurants, gardens, and producers — was transformed into a shared meal. But more importantly, it became the center of new relationships and new understandings.

Local businesses, food producers, volunteers, community champions, and participants from diverse backgrounds all contributed. Students from the film school and the folk high school joined in, bringing energy, ideas, and cultural perspectives. What had once been separate now became woven together through shared action and shared purpose.

The meal we created together wasn’t just about sustainability — it was a living reflection of the values we had explored earlier in the day during the Utopia Workshop: Cooperation, inclusion, playfulness, and place.
