A FOOD MOVEMENT IS EVIDENT IN ROTTERDAM

On 15 November a new food council Rotterdamse Voedselraad was officially kick-started at de Hillevliet. The Voedselraad aims to build connections between different food initiatives in Rotterdam, and ultimately co-create a community-led food agenda for the city. In the Netherlands there are only five municipalities with their respective food council, namely Ede, Den Haag, Haarlem, Amsterdam, and Rotterdam. The emergence of network infrastructure such as the food council holds the benefit of amassing lobbying power in influencing public policy while its effectiveness belies in its power in redistribution of resources, reorganization of labor, and relating to regenerative principles. Hence the question we can ask is: “How does the formalization of decommodified food as infrastructure contradict, complement, and complicate the transition towards a food-enabling society in Rotterdam?”
