BY BOAT IN THE LOFOTEN ISLANDS

The opportunity to admire the Lofoten Islands from the sea is another way of experiencing the uniqueness of this place. Thanks to our boat trip from Svolvær to Kabelvåg, we were able to get closer to the spirit of this remarkable land.

The sea defines the identity of the people of Lofoten. Fishing has always been, and continues to be, an important part of their lives. The centuries-old coexistence between humans and the sea has created a rich tradition that remains alive today.

Regardless of circumstances, the sea has always been a dependable source of food and a means of survival. This is perhaps why its gifts have always been treated with great respect and a sense of responsibility — also in today’s world shaped by economic regulations.

Fishing has also always involved great danger. The power and harshness of the sea inspire humility in people. We experienced this ourselves even during our short boat journey along the Norwegian coast.

After the trip, we took part in a fish filleting workshop. Under the guidance of the chef from the restaurant at Thon Hotel Svolvær, we learned how to make the most effective use in the kitchen of a product sourced from the waters visible from the hotel windows. It is truly impressive to see the respect and care with which local chefs treat the gifts of the sea.

The fish we prepared together during the workshop was later cooked by the restaurant’s chefs and served to us during an elegant evening dinner.

One of the key principles of the CONVIVIUM project is the preservation of local heritage and the cultivation of a respectful relationship with the natural environment. The activities prepared by Museum Nord for the CONVIVIUM Meeting in Lofoten gave us a wonderful opportunity to experience these values in practice.
