INTERCROPPING REVISITED

The last days have been busy preparing for an intervention on intercropping in Gdansk (for our solution – Intercropping Revisited). Intercropping is the farming practice of growing two or more crop species together at the same time in the same place. By looking at the evolution of its history, marked by ubiquity in ancient times, disappearance in industrial-capitalist times, and now resurgence, we can discern interlocking stories of colonialism, mobility, migration, resistance, and search for belonging that extend beyond the agricultural field and inform about our past, present and future relationships to cultural heritage. The images below present beans and squash (two traditional companion species which provide mutual benefits and nutrition to the cultivators), and a wooden multispecies tool which invites insects to the gardens for their collaboration.
