OPEN GARDEN IN THE THEATRE SPACE
How to combine love for plants with passion for theatre? Is it possible to green not only balconies and gardens, but also public and… stage spaces? Why does greenery areas matter so much today – for climate, community and culture?
These are some of the questions that the organizers and participants of the event that took place 17.05.2025 at the Wybrzeże Theatre in Gdańsk tried to answer. This meeting at the intersection of nature and art was also the inauguration of the summer season in the theatre garden.
The guest of the event was Paweł Sztarbowski – philosopher, playwright, deputy director of the Powszechny Theatre in Warsaw, author of the guidebook “How to green your own space” (“Jak zazielenić własną przestrzeń”). From his perspective, we looked at greening as a form of artistic and social action.
An exceptionally valuable perspective is one that allows us to combine the programmatic activities of cultural institutions with the green transformation of architecture and the spaces around us. The roof of the Wybrzeże Theatre is a perfect example of this. Even a patch of greenery on recognizable or historic buildings is a sing that greenery does not have to be treated as an intruder that creeps into centuries-old human heritage, but can be our ally in building a better image of the world.
