The Open Kitchen

The Open Kitchen (TOK) is a transdisciplinary research-by-design experiment that aims at reimagining new assemblages and uses of urban soup kitchens for the inclusion of diverse communities of human and more-than-human agents.

This is done through an incremental design of an “open kitchen” prototype, based on archival research, spatial research, interdisciplinary design and knowledge-sharing workshops across three locations in two phases (Rotterdam, Gdańsk, Flanders). The Open Kitchen runs in parallel with the Open Garden to be integrated into an exhibition in Rotterdam, with the showcase of the “open garden kitchen” prototype and the launching of a design manual for replicability. The exhibition will later travel to other partner locations. Target groups include, but are not limited to: local communities, cultivators, urbanists, (food) designers, soil specialists, garden designers, research institutes, academia, and policy makers in the field of urban food security.
