PAVILHÃO NA VINHA
Architecture Competition | Bairrada, Portugal
Design. Build. Experience. Design a small-scale pavilion in a living vineyard landscape and see your project built.
About the competition
Pavilhão na Vinha is an international initiative developed within the European CONVIVIUM project, exploring the relationships between food, cultural heritage, and conviviality.
The competition is exclusively for architecture students from the University of Coimbra.
It invites architecture students to design a small, innovative structure located within Portuguese vineyards – a project that connects:
- tradition and innovation,
- production and experience,
- local identity and global context.
Architecture as a Mediator Between Culture and Environment
Within the CONVIVIUM framework, architecture is understood as more than form – it becomes a tool for dialogue between landscape, culture, and production.
This competition explores how a small-scale intervention can:
- respond to environmental conditions,
- reflect local knowledge and traditions,
- support contemporary practices in viticulture,
- create meaningful spatial experiences.
The project should balance innovation with responsibility, and design with context.
The Vineyard Landscape as a Living System
Vineyards are not only productive environments – they are living cultural landscapes shaped by generations of knowledge, climate conditions, and evolving practices.
Across Europe, different viticultural regions have developed distinct approaches to cultivation, reflecting:
- climate and geography,
- local traditions and techniques,
- social and economic transformations.
In this context, architecture plays a key role – not only as infrastructure, but as part of the landscape itself.
